- Very strong Wi-Fi signal even through thick concrete walls.
- Loaded with plenty of features and customization such as QoS, firewall, TrendMicro's list of filters for malicious sites and more.
- Subjective: good looking design.
- Supports Asus mesh so you can repurpose older Asus routers to strengthen your signal.
- Has a mobile app where you can control and configure anything.
- Has dual band offering 2.4 and 5 GHz network plus 3 different guest access networks for each band (for a total of 6).
- Good performance.
Cons:
- The USB for remote storage is rather unnecessary as the router is not powerful enough. You should consider a NAS.
- A bit pricy for the performance, depending on your networking knowledge, you could create a more robust setup with a proper firewall, router and using separate access points.
It is an all in one setup for home users looking to have robust Wi-Fi for large homes or with concrete walls around. The UI is easy to understand and makes the settings accessible and easy to use but it also offers deeper customization if that's what you need.
Because Optimum gives you a crappy interface that never works via web interface, and it times out, and never lets you connect to the router, nor modify Guest networks, or anything, I bought a ARRIS Surfboard S33 DOCSIS 3.1 and this...
I thought I needed a tri-band like my last 802.11N router, but since we are well over 328 ft from our nearest neighbor, we have less interference on WiFi, and can't even see their SSIDs, and the single 5Ghz channel seems to work well for 3 wireless PCs, 3 TVs, and all our phones and tablets.
(We are looking to take on a roommate in the extra bedroom, so once they arrive, we shall see how this dual-channel works, and I'll update this.)
Well the 5400 is just a marketing trick. The maximum wifi6 computer handles is 2X2 MIMO + 160mhz = 2.4gpbs theoretical speed, or 1.2gpbs real world speed if you're lucky (there is no 4X4 160mhz wifi6 cards on the market; why? intel probably just wants to see the world burn); the 5400 just means it will support 2 devices at 2.4gpbs (maybe you have 2 computers right next to this router which connects 2 ethernet NAS and you're connecting them simultaneously to make this use case meaningful... i don't know why). You might think this sounds like an AX3000 router will just do the job, yes if you can find a 2X2 MIMO 160mhz router; but chances are all ax3000 routers are 4X4MIMO + 80mhz instead and you'd have halved speed this way, so you'd still need an AX5400 router...
Other than the huge marketing letdown, this router does the job; it's merlin supported (through an official fork); it has 512MB RAM which only AX86U (a really odd one) beats; wifi has been very stable for the month I bought it; one USB is sorta a letdown but I'd rather use a dedicated NAS, so I don't need one for the opkg expansion drive and one for a DAS ; I run aria2 and a flask api to download and upload very slow connections, and it works perfectly only falling short to a dedicated celeron DIY router.
This unit competes with wifi6 openwrt routers, craigslist AX86U and AX92U, and your custom celeron DIY router + AP. I'd recommend you check out your local craigslist first; I saw an AX92U near mine because they are sold in 2 packs and sometimes people don't need the second one. If you can snag one of that for sub $100 that's a good deal (although it's possible AX92U won't ever see ASUSmerlin, and warranty issues of course). AX86U is a bit rarer since its a toptier model and only a few people bought GT-AX11000 to replace their AX86U. If you have a quite heavy network use case (running firewalls, DNS filtering, webhosting and stuff) it's obviously better to use a celeron or even i3 DIY router since you'll have infinitely better hardware with just $100-$200; but it's also quite expensive and you need to find yourself 160mhz wifi6 APs, and they are just in a different price tier. As for openwrt wifi6 I only see xiaomi ax6000 as a real contender here; it's a great router on paper (and only $100 too!) but I've heard xiaomi routers being unstable sometimes.
one last tip: don't use iperf2 on the router itself as the server/client, limited by CPU power this router only yields ~400mpbs; once I ran iperf on two computers I get 900mpbs.
